Workers' demonstration in Tabriz amidst heavy security presence

GVF -- Hundreds of workers and their supporters have gathered today in front of the Labour Bureau of the city of Tabriz to demands their rights on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.

According to the website of Human Rights and Democracy Activists, hundreds of workers and their supporters gathered today in front of the city’s Labour Bureau located on Imam Khomeini street around 11am and protested against the widespread firing of workers, unemployment and poverty in the country.

According to the latest report from the site of the protests, the number of demonstrators is growing. Many of those present carried banners demanding an end to current economic situation in the country and the mistreatment of workers. 

It should be added that the plain-clothed and Basij forces as well as police and IRGC forces were present at the place where the demonstrations were taking palce. According to eyewitnesses, more than forty vehicles belonging to the police and military units were deployed in the area. In addition, a great number of baton holding security forces on motorbikes are also patrolling the area. A heavy security atmosphere is being reported from many cities in the country. 

Similar reports are also coming in from various cities in the country on the occasion of the International Workers’ Day (1 May). Workers and their supporters have also been planning to stage demonstrations in front of the Labour Ministry at 5pm local Tehran time.
