GVF -- Women’s rights activist Mahboubeh Karami was arrested at her home last night after security forces had shown a warrant for her arrest.
Last night around 10pm, security forces entered the house of Mahboubeh Karami and took her to an unknown location after inspecting her house as well as her brother.
Mahboubeh Karami had been involved in the one million signatures campaign to end discriminatory laws against women in Iran. Her brother said that the warrant for her arrest had been issued seventeen days before the fraudulent 12 June elections, and yet the accusations against were “rioting and taking part in gatherings!”
Within the past year, Mahboubeh’s primary concern was nursing her father who had fallen ill.
According to Karami’s brother, Houshang Pourbabaei is the lawyer in charge of Karami’s case.
This is the fifth time that Karami is being arrested by authorities. She was once arrested in June 2008 and held in prison for seventy days for allegedly acting against national security. In all the previous cases against her, she had been acquitted of the charges.
