Arrest of journalists continues

GVF - It would seem as though there is no end in sight for the campagin of arrest and intimidation against journalists in Iran. Akbar Montajabi, Ahmad Jalali Farahani, Somayeh Momeni, Zeinab Kazemkhah and Mahsa Jazini are among the journalists arrested within the past two days.
Political journalist Akbar Montajabi was arrested last night at his place of residence. He has a history of working with reformist newspapers such as Norooz, Mosharekat, Vaghaye-Ettefaghiyeh, Yas-e-no, Bahar, Shargh, Hammihan, Etemade Melli as well as weekly publications such as Shahrvand and Irandokht.
Security forces appeared at his place in the early hours of Sunday and took him to an unknown location after arresting him. The allegations against him are yet to be confirmed.
Judiciary officials also arrested journalist Zeinab Kazemkhah last night and confiscated her computer. She works for the news agency ISNA.
Somayeh Momeni, a reporter for the publication Nasime-bidari and a former reporter for ISNA and one of the activists in the one million signatures campaign to end discrimination against Iranian women was also arrested at her home with a warrant from the prosecutor general of Tehran.
Ahmad Jalali Farahni the editor of the social service of Mehr news agency was also arrested by security forces last night, a day after being fired from his job at the agency. He was then sent to the notorious Evin prison in Tehran. According to an Iranian opposition website the eight individuals who arrested Farahani also took away his notes, computer and books. Farahani’s suspicious dismissal from Mehr raises serious questions regarding the nature of Mehr agency’s cooperation with the security apparatus.
Mr Farahani has also worked for Iran newspaper and decided to cease his cooperation with the publication following Ahmadinejad’s rise to power in 2005.
Also, at 1:30am Monday 8 February Mahsa Jazini, student and journalist was also arrested in the city of Isfahan. She had previously been prevented from continuing her postgraduate studies as a result of her political activity. Security officials stated that the reason for her arrest was her position as a journalist. Jazini was transferred to Dastgerd prison in the city of Isfahan last night.
The recent wave of arrests comes just days before Iranians across the nation prepare themselves taking part in Green marches on 11 February which coincides with 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution in 1979.
