Mousavi: 'Devoted Green Movement supporters committed to moral principles'

In meeting with youth groups

GVF -- In the lead-up to the holy month of Ramadan, Green Movement leader Mir Hossein Mousavi has met with a group of youth representing the country’s different provinces.

According to the Kaleme website, the representatives from the provinces of Chahar Mahaal and Bakhtiari, Qom and Khorasan Razavi informed the former prime minister about the social and political situation in their respective provinces as well as the state of livelihood, unemployment and the rise in drug addiction in their regions. The representatives also pointed out during the meeting that students continued to hold meetings and gatherings, despite the constant pressure on political parties and the security atmosphere within universities. They also maintained that the Green Movement had gained further influence among different sectors of society.

Speaking about the recent hunger strike by political prisoners in Evin prison, Mousavi said, “the meaningful and inspiring strike by prisoners will eventually shows its effective outcomes and I’d like to congratulate these brave prisoners who ended their strike and witnessed its results.” In a statement released from Evin prison, fifteen of the prisoners said that following calls by Green Movement figures such as Mousavi, they were ending their hunger strike.

Mousavi told those present that the Green Movement had the capacity to resolve all the “moral” concerns of the country. “We must remember that the social deviances are the results of the wrongdoings, flawed ways of thinking and deceptive ways and lies created for the nation by the hardliners and for this reason I believe that the supreme and honourable goals of the Green Movement can control the deviations [from the right path] in society. We now witness that those who are devoted to the great goals of the Green Movement are extremely committed to moral principles.”

The 2009 presidential candidates also stressed the importance of ties between the clerical establishment and the youth along with “clarifying the values, ideals and news about the Green Movement” for the country’s religious clergy.

The veteran reformer also called for the full implementation of the constitution without the slightest disregard for any of part it. “As we all know and as the constitution’s article 27 points out, announcing one’s demands and the right to assemble are among the people’s obvious rights and no one can take away this right from the people, therefore the people will uphold this right when they deem it necessary and they will not wait for me or the likes of me before doing so.”

“Neglecting parts of the constitution, especial the nation’s rights renders, the rest of its articles as meaningless too,” he said. “How can those who are not even prepared to mention for once, the rights of citizens or the right of the people to control their own destiny, make any claim about the covenant between the people and the state?” Mousavi asked. “Violating this covenant will lead to the illegitimacy of the state and it would suffice to only evaluate the behaviour of the Guardian Council in reference to the constitution in order to understand the extent of which we have derailed [from the constitution].”

“Today we are in situation where not only the constitution, but even simple and flawed prison regulations are not respected by prison guards.”
